Research
has shown that mind and spirit must be nurtured to promote healing
and improve physical health. Recognizing this, The Grace Foundation
is working to create Grace Spaces in medical facilities throughout
the area. These rooms are colorful and inviting — a warm,
welcoming oasis in an otherwise clinical environment.
In
October 2004, the first Grace Space opened at St. Joseph’s
Hospital in Milwaukee. We’re so proud and excited to offer
this special haven for women with cancer. At the Grace Space, women
can receive a beautiful hand beaded hat from our Glad Hatter program;
possibly be fitted with a
prosthesis from Knueppel Healthcare Services, or research a particular
cancer, either online or through the vast research library offered
through St. Joseph’s Hospital. Most importantly, the Grace
Space exists to nurture the spirit.
In
this soothing living room setting, women enjoy the beautiful glass
sculpture designed especially for the space by Catherine Lottes;
the amusing shoe quilt wall hanging, designed by Hilde Strigenz
for our 2000 shoe show; “The Story”, a scrapbook of
our story from the beginning, created by Cathy Young; and “The
Pink Lady” painted by Kathy Corby. The Grace Space also features
a rotating library of coffee table books generously donated by Barnes&Noble
for everyone to enjoy.
